APF History

APF Avionics Production Factory

History of APF dates back to late 70s when PAF acquired a large number of air defence radar systems. This huge addition of ground radars in PAF inventory raised the requirement for establishment of radar rebuild factory to provide depot/ factory level support to newly inducted radar systems. This requirement was fulfilled through establishment of “Radar Maintenance Centre (RMC)” in year 1983. In year 1989, control of RMC setup was transferred from PAF to Ministry of Defence (Defence Production Division) and RMC was renamed as Kamra Avionics and Radar Factory (KARF). In descending years, role & task of factory was enhanced through inclusion of design, development, production and life cycle support of electronics systems of different aircraft. Accordingly, in year 2011 factory was renamed as Avionics Production Factory (APF). Some of the important milestones/ developments in APF’s journey of around four decades are mentioned below:

  • 1983 : Established as “Radar Maintenance Centre” for ground radars
  • 1989 : Renamed as KARF (Kamra Avionics and Radar Factory)
  • 1994 : Co-production & Maintenance / Repair facility for airborne radar
  • 1996 : Life Cycle Maintenance of Avionics systems
